12 × 12 × 2 inch Mixed Media: recycled shoeboxes, recycled plywood scraps, on wood canvas
Kerry Sutton: As I formed together each piece of hand-cut recycled shoebox, I sought to conjure a bold and emotive interpretation of our relationship with the ocean, consumption and how they both interplay to create a sustainable future. We owe the ocean an interrogation of our ideas, behavior, what and how we consume, and the impact therein. As the power and fragility of the ocean cries out for our thoughtful and intentional response, I created this piece to highlight this delicate interplay and the power we have to sustain. With intention, thought, and creativity, we can amalgamate the everyday, easily discarded items of our lives (such as shoeboxes and wood scraps) into vessels of sustainability.
